Much like his previous hit QWOP, Getting Over It actively fights against the player by giving them nothing but a sledgehammer to work with as the mountain becomes more treacherous. Climbing Over It is an online action game that we hand picked for. If that didn’t make things challenging enough, Foddy threw his trademark wrench into things. You play as a shirtless guy trying to hike up a very, very tall mountain, all while stuck in a pot. The hammer has a unique asymmetrical trapezoidal shape, and the cauldron has round sides, but a flat bottom. The hammer moves via an inverse kinematics rig, only the head having actual collision with the environment, and acceleration of the hammer is important and can translate to hurling yourself with more force. The man in the cauldron has a rotation and velocity that is separate from, but connected to the hammer. GOI’s use of physics makes it very nuanced to control. You can then take these skills and apply them to clear earlier parts of the game more easily as you inevitably repeat them. You’re expected to use more force to hurl yourself as the game progresses, and redirect your momentum midjump to get started moving, then go the way you need around obstacles. The game is also careful to steadily ramp up its challenges, with early ones having more definitive holds to grab onto, and later ones having you pull yourself along smaller and smaller holds in stranger directions until you’re pulling along practically flat surfaces. When a player indicates they are not, the game provides access to a chatroom populated by other players who have completed the game. Upon reaching the conclusion, a message asks players if they are recording the gameplay. The game concludes when a player reaches the highest point of the map and then enters space. As the player progress up the mountain, they are at a constant risk of losing some or all of their progress there are no checkpoints. The commentary also provides quotations relating to disappointment and perseverance when significant progress is lost by the player. The game is accompanied by voice-over commentary by Bennett Foddy discussing various philosophical topics.
